That's sad. Honestly, I personally would stop doing that kind of thing in my 50's.

Why would you stop tracking your car?

If he was wearing safety gear I wonder what the cause of death was. The car isn't that tore up is my only thought

yeah, and it looks like it was the passenger side which took most of the impact...maybe it was whiplash?

totally, then I thought maybe there was an intrusion of something, but it was a tire wall. Poor guy, I hate seeing this shit but it is the price you pay to track as safe as they try and make it

well here's another view, and apparently he didn't die on scene, but in hospital

and the helmets should answer one of your questions

A sobering reminder that track days are dangerous

The guy was in his 60s. Maybe he had a stroke, causing the crash?

And a good reminder about how the outcome would have been a hundred times worst if it occurred on a public road!

More people have to start realizing that even if bad things happen on tracks, you still have someone with medical experience to watch over you rather than waiting a good 20 minutes for an ambulance to beat lunch hour traffic.

if you look carefully, there's a camouflaged black helmet next to it

There's a point where things just get a little too risky.

Made (all of) the front page of the herald today - shame the only time motorsport gets serious coverage is when someone dies.

This is the second major-injury accident at Taupo in 4 months. And unless I miss my guess, it's basically the same accident as the MG one - guy misjudges exiting turn 9, hits the wall at a shallow angle much further down the straight (in this case probably went into the RH wall going backwards), corner of car digs into the tyres and spins the car round. Only difference was that in the MG's case it spun it round vertically too. I know Taupo's already considered pretty safe (FIA class 2), but I wonder if they're going to need to do something about that stretch between turns 9 and 10 - maybe get a sandtrap or two in there.

I'd bet the major injury was a neck one. With no 4 point belts he won't have been wearing a HANS. Digging a corner into the tyres at that speed is going to lead to a vicious whip-around, and the damage to the rear corner and position on the track suggests that's what happened.

Mucho sympathy to the family, and I hope they can take consolation from the fact that he died doing what he loved.
